The pig and the lion

Guild Wars Lion Mask

ArenaNet celebrated the Chinese New Year by throwing its own version of the event over the weekend in Guild Wars. The final event, fittingly, took place in Cantha (specifically Shing Jea Monastery) but there were events in Lion’s Arch and Kamadan for Prophecies and Nightfall players as well during the weekend.

All you had to do to get the special event mask was to show up in Shing Jea Monastery when the Celestial Pig did. The problem was the heavenly porker only appeared every three hours on the final day of the event and many a “Is it time yet?” was asked. ArenaNet should consider providing some in-game timer to indicate when the next event would begin.

There was an optional grind-y aspect of the event which involved collecting ingredients for dishes to placate the Celestial Pig when it arrived. Collect all the items and the pig would be so pleased it would out hand out goodies.

I only showed up an hour before the Pig did and did some special event PvE quests while waiting so I didn’t do anything to contribute to the ingredient-collecting. I can only offer my thanks to those players who went out of their way to make sure the Pig was happy.

I’d like to see ArenaNet provide some additional reward to the players who spent time acquiring ingredients for future events. An NPC in town who would list the names of players who contributed to the success of the event would be a nice way of recognising their generosity.

On the whole, it was a rather enjoyable event. I got some ang pows (which I immediately spent on skills), a miniature pet pig and a Lion Mask.
