“Jigoku no Banken!”

Favourite tokusatsu sequence of the week: Dekamaster’s debut in Dekaranger episode 13.

Dekamaster

The world’s sternest Muppet, Doggie Kruger, transforms into Dekamaster and has to take on 100 foot soldiers (the director thoughtfully provided an on-screen counter which carefully keeps tab on the number of foes left) yet he still manages to find time to pose with his blade and spout lines like, “The burning flame of my heart … perhaps it is hell for evil-doers. Be burnt out for the sake of peace!”

I can’t remember the last time I’ve giggled this much.

(More screencaps: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.)

I really don’t understand programs like this – for one thing, why on Earth are there always a bunch of teenagers or something that have superpowers or massive robots? How come I never got one?! Its the same with anime and most other Japanese entertainment – it just doesn’t tick over with me – but nearly everywhere I look on the Internet, someone somewhere is raving about it. It just doesn’t make sense to me…

Clearly, your heart does not burn with the flame of justice.

Replace “anime and most other Japanese entertainment” with “games and other electronic entertainment” and try to justify your passion for your own hobby to someone who doesn’t get it. I’d be surprised if the reasons you come up with don’t ultimately boil down to “because it’s fun” and while the f-word may not sound like much of a reason to convince those who don’t get it, it would probably be the best and most honest one.

I guess its just a different culture. Over where I live, its just more what we do. You wont find many anime-fans where I live, but you’ll find a lot of “games and electronic entertaiment” fans. I hope you didnt take any offense at my comments – I’m always just seriously confused by these programs! :-S
