Word of the day

Emasculate

1. Deprive of strength or vigour.

2. Remove the testicles of a male animal

e.g. “Being humbled by villains named ‘Goombas’ and ‘Koopa Troopa’ is really emasculating.”

I’m currently playing Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 on the GBA SP and as you might gather, it hasn’t been the smoothest of experiences.

I’m pretty damned sure I’d still be stuck on the initial levels if it weren’t for the save game option. The FAQs and guides on GameFAQs helped, too. Still, it took me an embarrassingly long time to get past the dastardly Larry Koopa at the end of World 1.

Having done so, though, I now feel confident I can beat this game. So bring on World 2. Give me your best shots, Micro-Goombas, I can tak- …

“Oh, mamma mia!”

Sigh.

Tomorrow’s word of the day: Chagrin.

Is it actually much different from the original? I played the original, found it slightly challenging (especially since I wasn’t all that old back then) but I didn’t think it nearly as hard as you’re describing. (Oh, and I just found your newer site – much better. And WordPress-ified which is great :P)

So what you’re saying is that you (as a kid) had little trouble with the game that is currently doing to me what pretzels do to GWB?

This is not making me feel better.

I think the main problem is that I have the reflexes of an elderly arthritic tortoise whereas the foes in SMB3 tend to be virile tortoises in peak physical condition who routinely beat up hapless Italian plumbers without raising a sweat.

I gather the GBA version of SMB3 is almost a straight port of the original with only minor changes. (Among the changes are support for the GBA e-reader and some minor tweaks to the level designs.)

The GBA version has been described as “technically the least desirable version” of SMB3 but it was Metacritic’s GBA Game of the Year for 2003.

    Heheh, great comments :D

That’s a pretty good score its received from a lot of reviews there. I really want to pick up the game and play it on my GBA (not SP) but I’m practically broke – so that ends that. I could always go and get out my NES from the attic, but its probably become a home for spiders or something.

From what I can remember, World 1 was pretty easy, and I managed to get through it okay. World 2, which is desert-y, I believe, was a bit annoying… the sinking sand was hell. The Ice world (#5?) was pretty damn evil too – too slippery. World 7, Pipeland, was fun – but very annoying – always coming in and out of the wrong pipes.

Probably what I like best about Super Mario Bros 3 (or Advance 4) is the wide variety of levels, the maps, and all the little special areas you can go to (A magic whistle etc – I hope thats still in the game) I’ll have to try and sell some old games and pick up a copy. Just thinking about it brings back lots of memories.

I’m only up to World 2 but the variety in level designs is nice and the different level elements — falling blocks, camouflaged micro-Goombas, homing ghosts — is keeping me on my toes.
